Tell Chevron CEO: Clean up Ecuador now

Chevron is guilty After an 18-year struggle, the Indigenous and rural Ecuadoreans suing Chevron to force the company to clean up its oil contamination in the Amazon have prevailed. In a historic ruling, the court in Lago Agrio, Ecuador found Chevron guilty and ordered the company to pay $8 billion to clean up its oily mess. Chevron of course immediately fired off a statement claiming that the judgment was fraudulent and the company would appeal the decision. Enough is enough. Some 30,000 Ecuadoreans remain at risk while Chevron tries every legal maneuver and dirty trick it can find.

Write to CEO John Watson and tell him it's time for Chevron to take responsibility for its oil pollution in the Ecuadorean Amazon.

Dear John Watson,

This week, the court in Lago Agrio, Ecuador found your company guilty of polluting the Ecuadorean Amazon with over 18 billion gallons of toxic oil waste. I was appalled to see that your company immediately fired off a press statement claiming that the verdict was the result of fraud and declaring Chevron’s intent to appeal the $8 billion judgment.

Chevron waged an unprecedented PR and legal campaign to avoid being held accountable for its oil pollution in the Ecuadorean Amazon, but nothing could change the fact that the evidence clearly showed Chevron’s guilt. It is time for you and Chevron to accept responsibility and see that justice is done in Ecuador.

The Ecuadorean plaintiffs have had to live with the impacts of your company’s oil pollution on their health and the local environment while also contending with your company’s intimidation tactics and abusive legal maneuvers. Over 1,400 of the people living in the affected areas have already died as a result of the pollution in their rainforest home. Some 30,000 more are at risk.

I urge you and Chevron not to waste more time appealing the judgment. In the name of human health and the environment, Chevron must start cleaning up Ecuador now.
