Hi-

There's something going on in America that is pretty disturbing and I wanted to you to know about it. It's called mountaintop removal, or MTR. It's a method of coal mining where the peaks of mountains are literally blown apart with explosives to expose seams of coal beneath the surface.

In the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, MTR is turning forests and beautiful mountain summits into barren flatlands.

MTR poisons the drinking water, kills wildlife and buries thousands of miles of streams and rivers with the rubble. Contaminated water is causing cancer, liver and kidney disease for the residents. All of this so that coal companies can get at the coal a little bit more cheaply with a lot less workers.

Today I took the pledge to help end MTR in 2010. I'm sending this to you because you seem like someone who'd want to help, too.
