CODE RED: the time for climate action is NOW

This morning, we sent a serious message for the companies destroying our forests and climate — a 70-foot long message — This is a “Code Red for Humanity” and the time for REAL climate action is NOW.

Companies like Chase, Liberty Mutual, and Procter & Gamble have spent decades making massive profits by ruining communities, rainforests, and our climate — and now it’s time to STOP the damage. Will you tell these companies this banner was meant for them?

We are in the midst of a planet-wide climate emergency, with unprecedented wildfires and hurricanes destroying communities across the US and the world. However, your institution continues to fuel the climate crisis by doing business with companies engaging in human rights abuses, deforestation, and/or fossil fuel expansion.

It is imperative that your company end support for fossil fuel expansion and deforestation to align with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and a world in which human rights, including Indigenous rights, are respected. RAN and 60 climate and rights organizations from around the world released a roadmap for what these commitments must look like in practice. You can read the Principles for Paris-Aligned Financial Institutions at ran.org/principles.

As outlined in the principles, we demand that your company take action: adopt a commitment requiring that the projects and companies you support are aligned with 1.5°C. This means not supporting any project or company that expands fossil fuels and deforestation. Furthermore, you must also commit to halving your overall climate impact by 2030 at the latest.

COP26, the next round of UN climate negotiations in Scotland beginning next week, will shine a bright spotlight on your policies and practices. Your company faces an urgent choice: Anything less than the above commitments means that your long-term climate promises are greenwash.

We urge you to adopt policies that truly meet the scale and urgency of the climate crisis and respect communities.
