I am writing to urge you to stop insuring oil and gas expansion projects in Brazil, which are fueling global climate chaos and harming local Indigenous Peoples, Quilombolas, and fishing communities.

Insure Our Future just released a brief revealing that you and your company are backing a dangerous and massive expansion of oil and gas exploration and development in Brazil. It is ludicrous to take on such climate risk when climate scientists and the International Energy Agency have made it clear: no new fossil fuel infrastructure can be built and existing infrastructure must be phased out rapidly to limit warming to 1.5ºC.

While you have put out statements touting a need for climate action, you're permitting Brazil to expand oil production by up to 70% over the next decade.

Brazilians have already experienced horrific impacts from the oil and gas industry. In 2019, an oil spill, considered the largest environmental disaster on Brazil's coast, contaminated the ocean and beaches for over three months. The oil spanned Brazil's waterways, even impacting the country's most iconic marine species. The climate crisis has already hit Brazil with increased drought conditions, enabling over 5 million acres of Brazil’s Amazon Forest to be burned in 2020, forcing Indigenous communities off of their lands. This is a human rights violation that will only be exacerbated if Brazil continues its oil and gas expansion.

Several of the proposed oil and gas sites would occur in some of the world’s most sensitive ecological sites around the Great Amazon Reef, including a national marine protection zone, and along Brazil’s entire coastline, threatening endangered species like sea turtles and whales.

A growing movement is calling on you to stop insuring Brazil’s national oil company, Petrobas, and rule out support for all fossil fuel expansion.
