At least 1,005 environmental defenders have been killed since the Paris Agreement. Big companies like Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, Mondelēz and Ferrero could be doing a lot more to protect defenders who stand up to their suppliers — let them know.

To The Consumer Goods Forum:

At least 1,005 environmental defenders have been killed since the Paris Agreement, according to Global Witness. These grave attacks don’t include the countless instances of violence that many defenders must endure daily, including harassment, criminalization and physical assault.

Consumer Goods Forum members like Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, Mondelēz and Ferrero source from forestry and agribusiness giants responsible for such rights abuses as they exploit lands belonging to Indigenous peoples and local communities.

Attacks on environmental defenders are an attack on our planet. The Consumer Goods Forum must do more to ensure protection for all defenders impacted by CGF member supply chains. We demand you take the following actions:

1. Require proof of full compliance with laws, regulations, and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) processes;

2. Establish robust forest and human rights monitoring systems to rapidly respond to harmful activities linked to your supply chains or financing;

3. Enact zero tolerance procedures within supply chains to prevent violence, criminalization, intimidation, and killing of human rights, land and environmental defenders immediately.
