To the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD):
Grassroots communities have been on the record - for years - about the true solutions to the biodiversity crisis and the human rights crisis that underpins it.
Many corporations on the taskforce themselves face ongoing controversies. These range from being some of the world’s largest financiers to fossil fuels, to being linked to human rights abuses and mass deforestation.
Rather than get their own house in order and follow the science, big corporations are once again distracting us with false solutions that will not only fail to work but will actually aid greenwashing.
I stand with the dozens of organizations across the world who have already raised the alarm that TNFD is undermining the true solutions to the nature crisis and will represent the next frontier in corporate greenwashing on nature.
Under TNFD:
1. Companies face no consequences for financing or driving biodiversity loss
2. Communities will continue to be denied information about who is financing companies or projects in their area
3. Companies will not publish a list of complaints and allegations related to accusations of harming nature or people
4. Companies are free to secretly lobby against new laws to protect nature
TNFD has spent millions of dollars empowering global corporations, legitimizing their excuses and coming up with so-called ‘solutions’ to the nature crisis that oppose basic common sense.
Grassroots communities have long led the way to protect nature and are most impacted by biodiversity loss. It’s the leaders on biodiversity, not the laggards, whose expertise we should follow.
