To Procter & Gamble:
In response to a Rainforest Action Network (RAN) investigation called the "Carbon Bomb Scandals" exposing illegal palm oil development in the globally important Leuser Ecosystem, Procter & Gamble (P&G) committed to working with its suppliers to restore the affected rainforest areas.
In recent weeks, RAN has gathered new evidence that Procter & Gamble is not fulfilling its commitment even as deforestation in protected areas in the Leuser Ecosystem, a biodiversity hotspot sometimes referred to as the “Orangutan capital of the world,” increases.
Nearly a year after RAN exposed P&G suppliers Wilmar, GAR, Musim Mas and Royal Golden Eagle group, the suppliers issued updates stating that the illegal plantations – belonging to Mr. Mahmudin — will in fact not be returned, meaning Mr. Mahmudin will try to supply illegal palm oil products with impunity into the network of mills supplying Procter & Gamble.
This is the latest case of failure by Procter & Gamble and its suppliers to deliver on their no-deforestation commitments, a worrying development alongside Procter & Gamble’s recently announced, weaker forest-risk commodity policy.
Many global brands have made public commitments to end exactly this kind of destruction for palm oil development. This situation demands an immediate response — Procter & Gamble must follow through on its restoration commitment, now!
Sincerely,
