**US insurance companies are FAILING our climate!**

Dear Timothy M. Sweeney,

For the seventh year in a row, the Insure Our Future Scorecard on Insurance, Fossil Fuels and the Climate Emergency has revealed that all major US insurers are failing to meet the urgency of the climate crisis. Of the 30 global insurance companies evaluated, you are lagging behind global peers due to your underwriting of and investments in fossil fuel expansion, a weak voting record on climate shareholder resolutions, and nonexistent policies on human rights.

To tackle the climate crisis and ensure that Indigenous rights are respected worldwide, your company needs to immediately scale up its ambition and translate words to concrete action.

Climate scientists at the IPCC made it clear: we have just seven years to half global fossil fuel use if we have any chance of limiting warming to 1.5ºC. As such, no new fossil fuel infrastructure can be built and existing infrastructure must be rapidly phased out. This means that the insurance industry must immediately stop insuring new fossil fuel projects, as any further expansion would lock us all into a world of runaway global warming. As the International Energy Agency underlined in its Net Zero by 2050 scenario, the path to that goal is "narrow but still achievable" and requires an immediate end to new oil and gas fields, coal mines or coal plants. Potential emissions from oil, gas, and coal reserves already in production more than exhaust a 2°C carbon budget, and take us far beyond 1.5°C.

This year, we mark a continued trend of major insurers walking away from homeowners and small businesses because of the risks that climate change poses through floods, hurricanes, wildfires, hail, and wind. Many regions are unable to access insurance at an affordable rate. Insurers are simultaneously fueling these disasters, and not supporting communities living through the climate crisis despite these same customers paying years of insurance.

In 2023, not a single global insurer developed a robust Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) policy, and the vast majority of insurers ignore meeting requests from Indigenous communities despite having internationally recognized rights to.

As the leader of a major insurance corporation, you have a responsibility to urgently scale up your actions to bring about the rapid and far-reaching transition to a low-carbon economy that prioritizes the health and safety of communities. I am calling on you to take the following steps:

1. Immediately stop insuring new and expanded coal, oil, and gas projects;

2. Set 1.5°C-aligned zero dates for phasing out all fossil fuel insurance;

3. Immediately end financing for projects and companies that are implicated in abuses of human rights, especially Indigenous rights.

There is no time for greenwash or delay. If your company continues to escalate the climate crisis, violate Indigenous sovereignty, and abandon communities, I will have no choice but to keep spotlighting its role in propping up fossil fuel expansion and encourage my family, friends, and institutions to do the same.

You cannot continue to profit off the destruction of people and planet. Insurance is supposed to protect us — now is the pivotal moment for you to become the climate leader we all need.
