I am writing to you out of great concern of Bank of America’s continued financial support of methane gas and overall fossil fuel expansion. Since the Paris Agreement, your bank has contributed over $279 Billion in fossil fuel financing.

Time is running out for transformative action to tackle the climate crisis. As the IPCC report puts it: “There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all.”

Liquefied “natural” gas is not natural at all, it’s methane. Methane gas continues to be touted by industry, governments, and banks as a “bridge fuel,” even after the International Energy Agency stated that in their special report, Net Zero by 2050: A Road Map for the Global Energy Sector, “No new natural gas fields are needed in the Net Zero Emissions beyond those already under development. Also not needed are many of the LNG facilities currently under construction or at the planning stage.”

Despite climate and community impacts, fierce community outcry and resistance, Bank of America remains linked to a massive slew of methane gas terminals in the Gulf Coast, pipelines like the Mountain Valley Pipeline, and methane projects around the world. In 2022 alone, you handed over $959 million to the world’s top 30 methane-expanding companies. As such, you are continuing to finance climate disasters and human rights violations.

By diluting your Environmental and Social Risk policy (ESRP), Bank of America is now the only major U.S. bank without specific policy restrictions on financing Arctic drilling, thermal coal mining, and coal-fired power plants. And your remaining policies have loopholes that allow you to finance $10.5 billion in lending and underwriting that overshoots your own climate commitments by the equivalent 25 billion barrels of oil.

Ending fossil fuel expansion, getting off fossil fuels, and making a just transition to renewables will help our collective efforts towards climate stability and give us a fighting chance to stop climate catastrophe.

Your bank must stop financing the expansion of fossil fuels including methane gas terminals and pipelines. We need real solutions, commitments, and leadership from Bank of America to protect people and the planet.
