Time is running out for transformative action to tackle the climate crisis. As the IPCC report says, “There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all.”

Toxic and volatile Liquefied “Natural” Gas (LNG) is neither a sustainable solution nor a “bridge fuel” to one. LNG is primarily composed of methane, which has 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere.

For years, frontline and impacted communities and allies have been fighting one of the largest fossil fuel buildouts of our lifetime: methane gas expansion in the US Gulf South – which your company supports. From Rio Grande LNG in Brownsville, Texas, to Freeport LNG in Freeport, Texas, to Cameron LNG in Lake Charles, Louisiana, dozens of projects are planned across the region despite fierce community resistance and substantial explosion, pollution, health, habitat, displacement, and climate risk.

Please listen to communities and rule out underwriting, investing, and reinsurance for midstream infrastructure, like methane export terminals, as well as other fossil fuel expansion.

The insurance industry, and your company as a leading global property and casualty insurer in particular, are well placed to accelerate and scale up a just transition away from fossil fuels in line with the conclusions of the world’s leading climate scientists:

1. Immediately stop insuring new and expanded coal, oil, and gas projects;
    2. Set 1.5°C-aligned zero dates for phasing out all fossil fuel insurance;
    3. Immediately end financing for projects and companies that are implicated in abuses of human rights, especially Indigenous rights.

There is a growing global movement to demand insurers stop enabling fossil fuels and get serious about climate action. During the Insurance Global Week of Action, over 100 actions were held in 31 countries across the globe, calling on you and your peers to take urgent action for our collective futures. If your company continues to escalate the climate crisis, violate Indigenous sovereignty, and abandon communities, the pressure will only continue and grow.
