Stop insuring Freeport LNG!

Don’t believe what the fossil fuel industry is trying to tell you: LNG is NOT natural. LNG is methane gas — an extremely volatile fossil fuel that has 80x more climate-warming power than carbon.

Every methane gas terminal further escalates the climate crisis, locks us into decades of reliance on fossil fuels, and harms the communities they’re built in.

Freeport LNG in Freeport, Texas was built WITHOUT community consent and has had multiple dangerous events like explosions that have injured people and released toxins into the air. Despite all of this, insurance companies like Chubb and Liberty Mutual keep insuring these dangerous projects.

Sign the petition below to demand these insurers respect human rights and stop insuring methane terminals on the Gulf Coast.

To Liberty Mutual, Chubb, AIG, and any company associated with insuring Freeport LNG:

We urge you to meet with communities impacted by the volatile and risky Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry as soon as possible, and to rule out underwriting, investing, and reinsurance for midstream, export, and downstream LNG infrastructure, as well as other fossil fuel expansion.

Time is running out for transformative action to tackle the climate crisis. As the IPCC report puts it: “There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all.”

Methane gas has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere. We are urging you to take urgent action by ruling out methane intensive projects like Freeport LNG.

Grassroots communities like Better Brazoria: Clean Air Clean Water want you to step up and take meaningful action in response to the explosion that happened in their community. From the Permian Basin where gas is extracted, to the Gulf, environmental justice communities have been speaking out about the risks of explosions, the risks to workers, the increase in cancers and pollution for years. Yet, these facilities keep being constructed and expanded.

The following are Better Brazoria’s community demands:

1. Stop insuring Freeport LNG - We remain adamant that this is the best way you can protect our community.

If you maintain Freeport LNG as client, the community requests the following stipulations:

2. Emergency response - Freeport LNG should hold an informational meeting with the community and a third party facilitator, to present its emergency response plan and answer questions about implementation.

3. Staffing - Freeport LNG should publicly demonstrate that it has a fully trained staff to meet the minimum of 200 employees as outlined in the Brazoria County and other local tax abatement agreements.

4. Pipe safety - Freeport LNG needs to publicly release info demonstrating that its pipes meet PHMSA safety standards.

The insurance industry, and your company as a leading global property and casualty insurer in particular, are well placed to accelerate and scale up a just transition away from fossil fuels in line with the conclusions of the world’s leading climate scientists.

We are now in the decisive decade for the climate, and we need to see meaningful policies now. There is no time for greenwash or delay.
