Brands and banks: Respect the right to say "no"

Brands like Mondelēz, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble and Unilever are sourcing cheap palm oil and pulp and paper from companies who are responsible for pushing communities off of their homelands. They know their products are made at the expense of Indigenous and frontline communities, but they’ve put corporate profits above human rights.

The future of the world’s forests depend on the communities who protect them and call them home. However, as forests are destroyed for oil palm and pulp and paper plantations, the rights of Indigenous and frontline communities are being ignored.

Major brands and banks, including your company, source from or finance the forestry and agribusiness giants that are responsible for the violation of human rights, and exploitation of lands that are traditionally-owned by Indigenous and local communities. The lands exploited include villages and farms, as well as forests which are used for hunting and gathering. According to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, communities have the right to say “no” to unwanted development on their land. This right, however, has been too long ignored by producer companies eager to expand their plantation holdings.

Today, I am calling on your company to require proof that its suppliers or financial clients, operate in full compliance with laws, regulations, and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) processes for all areas under the management and control of their corporate groups. As a matter of urgency, your company must demonstrate that the rights of affected Indigenous Peoples and local communities are being respected, especially their right to give or withhold their Free, Prior and Informed Consent to proposed and existing plantation developments that affect them.

Please take action and show the world that your company is a leader and takes the rights of Indigenous and frontline communities seriously. There is no time to waste.
