In one month, big banks will decide whether or NOT to renew the $2.2 billion loan to expand Enbridge’s Line 3 and the flow of tar sands.

The path of Enbridge’s proposed Line 3 pipeline cuts through pristine wetlands and watersheds in northern Minnesota, through the heart of Minnesota’s lake country, and some of the largest and most productive wild rice beds in the world. Many Anishinaabe communities along the Minnesota portion of the proposed route are opposed to the project, making Line 3 in violation of the internationally recognized principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent for impacted Indigenous peoples.
According to the IPCC’s special report on 1.5°C, we have just ten years to halve emissions in order to stave off the worst effects of the climate crisis. Given this urgency, it is unacceptable that JPMorgan Chase is continuing to pour tens of billions of dollars into dirty fossil fuel projects and companies. Your continued support for companies building fossil fuel projects like Line 3, comes despite strong Indigenous and grassroots opposition.
Your bank remains the world’s biggest banker of fossil fuels, and as CEO we have a set of clear demands for you:
- Stop financing tar sands extraction and pipelines.
- Immediately end your funding for companies that are expanding fossil fuel extraction and transport.
- Put in place a plan to phase out all support for fossil fuels on a timetable aligned with the Paris Agreement.
