The Keep It in the Ground movement is on a roll.
For the last few months, we’ve been protesting at Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands auctions, where fossil fuel companies buy up land for as little as $2 an acre to drill, frack and mine for private profit, and cook the climate in the process. The BLM is feeling the pressure! Since November, they’ve canceled or postponed oil and gas leasing auctions in Utah, Montana, Washington, D.C. and Wyoming.
In fact, the Colorado BLM was supposed to be holding an auction today — until they cancelled it last week. That gives them a golden opportunity to take the next step towards where we urgently need to go. Today, let’s push them to do just that!
Call the Colorado BLM to urge them: cancel all upcoming fossil fuel leasing in Colorado, and lend your support to ending new federal fossil fuel leasing nationally.
I’m writing to you from Colorado, where I’m delivering that very message in person. This morning, along with allies from a dozen Keep It in the Ground groups from Colorado and across the country, I helped deliver a letter to the regional BLM director urging her to stop giving away public lands in Colorado.
Amplify that message by picking up the phone today!
Making a call can have a real impact, especially when it’s paired with an on-the-ground event like the one I was a part of this morning. And it’s easy! We give you a number and a script — you just make the call, and tell us how it goes.
The Keep It in the Ground movement helped create political space for the moratorium, announced last month by the Obama administration, on coal leasing on public lands.1 That’s incredible progress in a very short time — and we’re just getting started.
President Obama has less than twelve months to establish a real climate legacy by stopping fossil fuel leasing on public lands and oceans — a step that would keep 450 billion tons of carbon pollution out of the air. The BLM is the agency within the president’s administration that oversees the climate-killing corporate giveaway of our public lands — which is why we’re pressuring them so hard. And it’s regional BLM offices like the one here in Colorado that administer these climate auctions — so it’s the perfect place to push.
Call the Colorado BLM today! Tell them to Keep It in the Ground!
